Most Important Ways to be Prepared for Field Employment:
- All employees must be clean and sober while on the job and must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check. Although marijuana consumption is legal in the state, federal law forbids anyone who handles a gun from consuming it. Employees who carry a gun (Bear Guards/Wilderness Safety Specialists) can not have a felony conviction or a domestic violence conviction.
- Federal employment law requires the employee must have either a passport or two forms of identification, e.g., Tribal ID, State ID or driver’s license, School ID with photo. (Form I-9)
- All field work requires a person to be physically fit, able to work long hours and carry heavy loads.
- Must pass the training required for the position. For example, Bear Guards/Wilderness Safety Specialists must be able to travel and complete 3-4 days of training prior to final employment.
- Must be able to communicate with the employer (have a phone, cell phone, emergency contact).

JOB DESCRIPTION
Position/Title: Field Observer (Doyon Lands)
Approximate Dates:
March 1- 20, 2023 & May – September 2023
Responsibilities:
The Field Observer (FO) works with the survey, drilling and
geophysical crews. The FO accompanies field crews to observe and
document the field crews’ activities while performing work on Doyon
Lands.
Reports to: MDC Supervisor, or assigned
Non-Supervisory: Observes and records land use and activities.
Essential Functions:
• Accompany survey, Heli-drill and recorder crews to observe and document the field crews’
activities while performing work on the Lands.
• Have read and understood the Doyon Land Access Agreement (will be provided).
• Understand and document prohibited Activities and Uses (section 1.7, et al.)
Qualifications:
• Must be willing to submit to criminal background check (no felonies or domestic violence in past 5
years) and drug testing.
• All applicants must be healthy and strong, show a keen knowledge of the outdoors, wildlife and
survival skills; have experience working in remote conditions for extended periods of time.
• All applicants must be always CLEAN and SOBER while in training and in the field and willing to work as
a team member with minimal support.
• Applicants may be required to participate in the company training and HSE program in Fairbanks.
Required Equipment (some will be issued and must be checked-back in good condition)
► Day (or 2-day) backpack
► Lighter or water-proof matches
► Seasonal appropriate clothing, socks, gloves
► Sleeping Bag (seasonal requirement)
► Ropes, knife, saw
► Camera, notepad, waterproof pencil
► Other seasonally required gear, complete list provided for each call-out.
Pre-Employment
Drug tests are required & a back ground check from Alaska Department of Safety.
Working Environments
Some of the work is performed in a professional office setting with a wide variety of people in differing
functions and roles, most of the time the Field Observer will be in a remote setting.
90-day Probationary Period, with regular performance reviews and an annual pay review.
Physical Demands
The work is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, & carrying items weighing
less than 40 lbs.

Bear Guard/ Wilderness Guide June 2023 – September 2023
Responsibilities: The Bear Guard/ Wilderness Guide works with the survey, drilling, & geophysical crews. The primary job function is to protect the crews from any environmental hazard while working in remote areas. The main objective is to prevent and discourage any conflicts with wildlife. Guides mitigate any dangerous situation and direct the crews safely and calmly. The job sites are remote wilderness areas and hazards, such as mud bog, thin ice, open water & severe temperatures are critical. Therefore, local wilderness experience is crucial for the safety of working crews under normal and emergency situations.
Essential Functions:
- Accompany Active crews watching for bears/wildlife or any potential hazards.
- Select safe water crossing on lakes or creeks & traverse any difficult terrain.
- Perform First Aid and essential survival skills to prevent frostbite, hypothermia, or exposure to the elements.
Qualifications:
- Must have No Felonies and must supply a background check from the Alaska Department of Safety.
- Must possess a current Gun Safety Certificate, and an annual certification is required. Must demonstrate firearm safety.
- Must pass a Pre-Employment drug test. All Applicants must be well-groomed and completely Sober while training and on the job.
- Essential physical requirements – Must be able to lift 40 lb., and be of overall good health, as required by remote working conditions.
Required Equipment (Gun and hazing equipment will be issued)
- 12-gauge Shot Gun, Slugs, Rubber Bullets, Cracker Shells, Bear Spray, and Aerial distress flares.
- Day Pack or if required 2-day pack, waterproof matches, lighter,
- Clothing appropriate for the season
- Sleeping Bags, ropes, knife, saw, and First Aid Kit
Pre-Employment
A drug Test and a Background test from The Alaska Department of Safety are required.
